German publication Handelsblatt reported that Tesla’s new car plant near Berlin has received final approval from German authorities. The company is preparing for the opening ceremony scheduled for March 22 or 23.
Elon Musk will take part in the event and hand over the first 30 German-made Tesla Model Y Performance Edition cars to owners. However, obtaining a license does not mean that Tesla can start production immediately. There are other conditions that the company will have to fulfill before starting production.
With months of delays in obtaining final approvals at Tesla’s Berlin plant, the company has had plenty of time to fine-tune and polish the manufacturing process. Now the company has started test production, with four Model Y test cars set to be released this week. Three of the four cars will come with 19-inch Gemini wheels, while the fourth will come with 20-inch wheels. Also, unlike power test vehicles, these range test vehicles are not equipped with radar.
No word yet on when Tesla’s Berlin plant will officially begin mass production of the long-range version of the Model Y. The release of these test vehicles will help determine the timing of the start of mass production.
The process of obtaining permission to operate the plant in Berlin is very slow. Musk has previously said that the Berlin plant could be approved last summer.
