Tesla will recall 53,822 vehicles in the US as the company’s autonomous driving software (Beta) does not allow some models to come to a complete standstill at certain intersections, creating a safety hazard.
According to Reuters, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated that the recall concerns some S and Model X vehicles of the years 2016-2022, Model 3 of the years 2017-2022 and Model Y of the years 2020-2022. NHTSA said the feature, also known as the FSD Beta, could allow vehicles to cross an intersection without stopping at a STOP sign.
Tesla will carry out an over-the-air software upgrade that will disable the “rolling stop” function, NHTSA said. Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Last week, Tesla announced that the number of FSD beta vehicles in the United States had grown to nearly 60,000 from a few thousand by the end of September. Tesla has tried an improved version of the auto-driving software on public roads, but the automaker and regulator have said that these features do not make cars autonomous.
Tesla said it was unaware of any warranty claims for accidents, injuries or deaths related to the recall until January 27.
