Recently, experts from the American site Edmunds.com published the results of their own tests of the range of popular electric cars. Most of the vehicles managed to drive more than originally announced by the manufacturer. For example, the Porsche Taycan exceeded its passport figure by 59.3% and became the leader in this test. However, all Tesla models have surprisingly failed an independent test. Company representatives explained why this happened.
It turned out that Edmunds specialists did not use the full potential of the electric car. The fact is that the test ends immediately after the power reserve on the display drops to zero. That is, an electric car with a full battery charge must drive on city and highway roads until it is completely discharged. The kilometers traveled is the distance value.
Tesla noted that their electric cars are still capable of driving tens of kilometers even after zero is displayed on the residual stock sensor. This is why the company considers Edmunds’ results to be underreported for their models.
To minimize errors, the experts repeated the experiment. So, for comparison with Tesla, the Ford Mustang Mach E and Volkswagen ID.3 were taken. The test result turned out to be predictable: the American corporation regained its leadership positions. Tesla, even on an “empty” battery, drives further than its competitors.
According to the new results, the Tesla Model 3 Long Range with zero battery capacity traveled 35 km at 105 km / h and over 6 km in crawling mode until it came to a complete stop. At the end of the list was the Ford Mustang Mach E. After the power reserve dropped to zero, the electric car managed to drive only 9.3 km at a speed of 105 km / h, and then another 2.4 km in crawling mode.
Tesla also emphasized that the range margin is calculated individually for each electric car model, based on the condition of the traction battery and external factors. Therefore, it is clearly not worth expecting that the car will be able to drive a long distance at zero.
