Tesla “voluntarily” recalls Model S and X electric vehicles

Tesla has finally announced that it is “voluntarily” recalling all Model S and X electric vehicles with touchscreen issues caused by depleting eMMC resources. In mid-January, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) officially asked to withdraw them, which began to study the problem situation in June last year in response to an appeal from the owners of electric vehicles.

As a reminder, users complained that the computer’s touch screen becomes less responsive over time, the turn-on time increases, the computer freezes and requires a restart, and in some cases it completely fails. This is how the built-in eMMC flash memory is depleted. In 2018, the manufacturer began using a new computer, which solved the problem, but the owners of old electric vehicles previously had to pay for a replacement computer out of their own pockets. It was only recently that Tesla recognized the problem as a design flaw and offered an extended warranty.

However, many important functions in Tesla cars are only accessible through the touchscreen. Therefore, the NHTSA considered the issue to be a safety issue. By the way, according to official data provided by Tesla at the request of NTHSA, the percentage of computer failures in Model S and Model X machines reaches 30% of a certain release date. The automaker also confirmed to the agency that eventually all early-production computers will eventually fail due to an eMMC problem.

During the recall, Tesla promises to replace the eMMC with a new 64GB eMMC module for free. Those who have already completed the replacement at their own expense can count on a refund. In addition, the automaker offers a complete computer replacement. In total, more than 100,000 Model S and Model X electric vehicles fall under the review.
