Tesla may license its Full Self-Driving (FSD) autopilot technology to other car manufacturers, according to CEO Elon Musk. He made this statement during the Tesla AI Day event.
Asked if Tesla plans to open source its software, Musk replied: “Well, building the system is in principle extremely expensive, so you have to pay for it somehow. Unless people want to work for free. But I have to say that if other car companies wanted to license it and use it in their cars, that would be cool. Our autopilot is not just for Tesla vehicles. ”
Such a move would allow competing car manufacturers to incorporate some degree of driving autonomy into their models without investing the huge sums of money needed to develop such a system from scratch. In any case, most industry experts believe that truly self-driving vehicles will not appear for decades. Before such technologies can be globally resolved, complex legal and insurance issues must be resolved.

Still, Musk argues that Tesla’s next-generation total self-government “will be able to achieve complete self-government with a level of security much higher than that of a human: at least 200% or 300% better than that of a human.”
Musk has argued for years that Tesla’s self-driving technology is safer than a person behind the wheel, but earlier this week, the U.S. government launched a formal investigation into accidents involving the company’s autopilot system that injured 17 people and killed one.
In late July, Musk announced that the Tesla Supercharger network, which is considered the most reliable and widely available in the world, will be open to third-party vehicles for the first time later this year.
