Testing of the Lastochka unmanned electric train has begun in Moscow. This was reported by the press service of the Russian Railways (Russian Railways).

Testing of the unmanned “Swallow” is carried out on the experimental ring in Shcherbinka. The train is equipped with a smart vision system that includes video cameras, including infrared, and lidars. The AI system detects obstacles along the way while the train automatically follows the schedule.
As noted in the Russian Railways, tests are going on intensively – up to 80 entrances to obstacles per day in different weather and visibility conditions. The races are supervised by the driver and expert developers, and dummies are used as obstacles on the tracks.
According to experts and developers, even now the system in some circumstances works better than the driver: it has a higher obstacle detection range, especially at night, faster reaction speed, and it does not know fatigue.
The train is slated to be certified this year for Level 3 Automation (GoA3), which includes automatic speed control according to schedule and obstacle detection. Actions in emergency situations are still the responsibility of the driver.
