Testing of autonomous cars without a driver in the cabin begins in Russia

In Russia, it will be allowed to test unmanned vehicles without an engineer in the cabin. Testing will begin in 2021 and will take place on public roads. This is stated in the plan approved by the federal government.

The Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation reported that the set of measures provides for the experimental commercial operation of VATS (“highly automated vehicles”) in certain regions of the country. The agency has already provided a four-year program for testing VPBX on the roads of Russia, a prerequisite for which is to ensure the safety of road users and comply with established rules. If this project is properly implemented, then by the end of 2024 drones will become part of the country’s transport complex.

It should be noted that before the signing of the plan for testing the VPBX on public roads, the project was approved by First Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Belousov. During the preparation, the positions of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the FSB, the Ministry of Economic Development, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Federal Security Service, the Bank of Russia, the Ministry of Justice and Rosstandart were taken into account. In addition, the set of tests was agreed with the Digital Transport and Logistics Association, the Russian Union of Auto Insurers and Yandex, Sberbank and KAMAZ organizations.

An important fact is that the autonomous car testing event was created on behalf of Vladimir Putin. The President believes that this plan will help Russian developers improve their technical capabilities, which, in turn, will enable them to compete in the international market. The innovative project will become a key trend in the digital development of the transport complex all over the world.

For reference: unmanned vehicles have been tested in Russia since 2015. Autonomous systems are being tested by companies such as KAMAZ, NAMI, Yandex and Sberbank. However, at the moment, a test engineer must be present at the driver’s seat, who will take control in case of an emergency.
