The issuer of the largest stablecoin by capitalization, Tether USD (USDT), is the Tether company, reported that, as a result of cooperation with law enforcement agencies, it froze $835 million of stolen funds, most of which were associated with hacks of blockchain services and crypto exchanges. Writes about this RBC Crypto.
The company confirmed its intentions to closely cooperate with law enforcement agencies around the world in the fight against the use of cryptocurrency to finance terrorism and armed conflicts. According to the issuer, to date Tether has contributed to the investigations of 31 agencies from 19 jurisdictions around the world.
In the process of cooperation, the company worked with law enforcement agencies in Germany, South Korea, Switzerland, Canada, China, India, Israel, Kyrgyzstan, Great Britain, Ukraine, the United States and others. In particular, Tether froze 32 wallets with assets totaling more than $873 thousand, which were associated with illegal activities in Israel and Ukraine.
The issuing company emphasizes that although the amount that Tether was able to freeze and return to its rightful owners is only a small part of the damage caused to the global economy from cybercrimes, the very technical feasibility of such operations demonstrates the innovative capabilities and level of security that blockchain technologies can bring into the global financial system.
Last week, Israeli police reported that, in cooperation with the Binance exchange, they had frozen cryptocurrency accounts belonging to Hamas. The addresses of donation wallets were published by the group on social networks from the first day of the conflict.
