THE Joe Biden said Tuesday it plans to meet with lawmakers in Congress on guns after massacre at a Texas elementary school last week, that cost the lives of 19 students and two teachers and has reopened the debate on possession of weapons in the USA.
“There is a lot of horrible pain,” Biden said during a meeting with New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Arden at the Oval Office.
Biden, who visited the families of the victims on Sunday at his Uwalde Texassaid he experienced the consequences of massive gun attacks more than any other US president.
“Many of them could have been avoided and the catastrophe… is unbelievable,” he said. «I will meet with Congress on guns. I promise you “ he told reporters as he walked out of the presidential office.
Ardern expressed its condolences to the victims of the attack in Texas, but also to the racist attack on May 14 in Buffalowhere ten people were killed.
“It is catastrophic to see the consequences in these communities,” she said.
Ardern said she would be happy to share anything related to New Zealand’s gun ownership experience if it was worth it.
Biden described as “important” what the country is doing with technology companies.
As the Athenian-Macedonian News Agency reminds, after a massacre that took place in 2019 in Christchurch, New Zealandin which a lone gunman killed 51 Muslims, Ardern banned semi-automatic weapons and imposed other restrictions on the use of weapons.
These actions by the New Zealand government are not in line with the situation in the US, where members of Congress and activists are fighting to combat gun violence, with the incidence of gun attacks being numerous.
In the United States, lawmakers have repeatedly failed to enforce gun laws as a precaution, following bloody incidents of gun violence over the past decade.
The Democrats of Biden are open to imposing new restrictions on gun ownership, while on the other hand Republicans have a broader view of gun rights.
Members of Congress from both parties are working to take possible legislative action despite previous failed attempts. The White House announced on Tuesday that Biden does not support a ban on all weaponsstressing that it is working on the possibility of taking action with executive decrees to protect against gun violence.
The White House is urging Congress to take action on the issue, and Biden for the time being seems to be giving lawmakers the time they need to find compromises that could be voted on.
“We will allow this process to evolve,” said White House spokeswoman Karin Jean-Pierre.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, has repeatedly said after gun attacks on Uvalde Elementary School last week that gun regulations are not the answer.
