Texas Ranger vs Vampires: What Movies to Watch in October

In October, the audience is waiting for a lot of vampires and prequels. First, AMC is preparing a new version of Interview with the Vampire, and Syfy has decided to film the Fat Vampire series of novels. Secondly, The CW will launch two prequels at once: Walker: Independence and Winchesters. Interestingly, the latter is expected to feature Jensen Ackles in his legendary role as Dean Winchester. Netflix will release a horror anthology from Guillermo del Toro in October, Apple TV+ will release Shantaram with Charlie Hunnam, and Amazon will release a sci-fi thriller with Chloe Grace Moretz. “Interview with the Vampire” (Interview with the Vampire)

The series is based on the 1976 novel of the same name by Anne Rice. However, most viewers are more familiar with the 1994 film adaptation starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. The action will begin at the end of the 18th century in New Orleans, when the young aristocrat Louis de Pont du Lac loses his wife in childbirth. The child also does not survive and the man loses all interest in life. Louis does not have the courage to commit suicide and he indulges in all serious in the hope of quickly reducing himself to the grave. During these adventures, he meets a mysterious handsome man named Lestat, who turns out to be a vampire. He charms Louis with his attitude towards eternal life. Then the aristocrat decides that at the moment becoming a vampire will be more interesting than death. Interestingly, the AMC channel bought the rights to the entire Vampire Chronicles cycle, so if the first season of the series is successful, viewers will have many sequels.

“Vampire Reginald” (Reginald the Vampire)

Interestingly, another vampire series is coming out on October 5th. Streaming service Syfy has bought the film rights to Johnny B. Truant’s Fat Vampire novel series. Reginald Baskin is a moderately well-fed and not too lucky young man who does not really enjoy life. Every day he faces all sorts of problems, frustrations and troubles. And one day he is turned into a vampire. And it also brings him only a bunch of new problems. Firstly, he enters the world of slender, beautiful and vain bloodsuckers, being overweight and clearly standing out in their crowd. Secondly, he needs to find his “chip” in a short time and demonstrate it to the main vampire, otherwise he will be executed. Starring Jacob Batalon, whose career skyrocketed after playing Spider-Man’s best friend in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“Walker: Independence” (Walker: Independence)

In early 2021, The CW aired the first season of the Hard Walker reboot with Jared Padalecki replacing Chuck Norris. The channel and the actor hoped that this project would take the place of the finally retired Supernatural. But the series caused rather disappointment among the audience. True, despite the low ratings and falling ratings, the series will receive a third season on October 7th. Moreover, the day before its premiere on The CW, a spin-off of the Walker: Independence story starts. The action will unfold in the United States at the end of the XIX century. The wealthy Walker family travels from Boston to Independence, Texas. There, Mr. Walker is supposed to take the position of sheriff, but on the way, an unknown person attacks the spouses’ van and kills her husband. Mrs. Abby Walker miraculously survives. The Indians rescue her and help her get to Independence, where she learns that the killer is the city’s new sheriff, Tom Davidson. Mark Sheppard, familiar to the audience from Supernatural, will appear in the series, and the main role went to Katherine McNamara.

Midnight Club

The Night Owls Club is a new project by horror drama master Mike Flanagan, best known for The Oculus, Somnia and Gerald’s Game, as well as the horror series The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass for Netflix. It is based on the novel of the same name by Christopher Pike. The main characters of the series will be eight terminally ill young people living in a home hospice in Rotterdam. Every night they get together to tell each other some scary stories. However, one day their conversation turned to something else. The disease progresses, which means that soon they will begin to die. Therefore, the group decides that the first one to die will definitely have to contact the rest from the other world. And when one of them departs to another world, strange events begin to happen to the rest.

The Winchesters

  • Platform: The CW
  • Release date: October 11th.
  • Release format: one episode per week (12 episodes).
  • Genre: Fantasy, Action, Drama.

October 11 on The CW starts another prequel, but this time much more promising. The Winchesters is a series that tells about how the parents of Dean and Sam Winchester from Supernatural met and began to fight evil. It happened in the 1970s, when a young John Winchester returns from the Vietnam War and is trying to figure out what to do next. Then he meets 19-year-old Mary Campbell, who hunts monsters. John plunges into an amazing and dangerous world of supernatural forces and mythical creatures. Moreover, his ancestors were also not just hard workers. All of these shocking secrets will be told through the mouth of the narrator – Dean Winchester. Yes, Jensen Ackles will return to his legendary role and will occasionally delight fans with his appearances in the Winchesters.

Shantaram

Apple TV+ is set to release its own hit in October. The series is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Gregory David Roberts, which he wrote based on his own biography. The film adaptation has been in development for many years, it has repeatedly changed writers and so on. And now the long-suffering project “Shantaram” will finally reach the audience. The action begins in the 1980s in Australia. Former thief and drug addict Lyn Ford is serving a long prison sentence. One day he manages to escape. He immediately sets off on a journey across the ocean to India. There, on the busy streets of Bombay, he plans to start a new life. He tries to help others, finds love, but the past still catches up with Lin. The project will also be a TV comeback for lead actor Charlie Hunnam (King Arthur of the Sword), who last appeared in a series eight years ago (Sons of Anarchy).

“Peripheral Devices” (The Peripheral)

  • Release date: October 21st.
  • Release format: one episode per week (8 episodes).
  • Genre: fantasy, thriller.

A new fantastic project from the authors of the series “Westworld”, in which the leading role will be played by Chloe Grace Moretz. Peripherals is based on the science fiction novel of the same name by William Gibson. The action takes place in America in the near future. A girl named Flynn Fisher works in a 3D printing shop, earning little money, although everyone tells her that she is capable of more. Her brother Burton, a retired Marine, lives on a disability pension and works as a beta tester for a new computer game. Once, due to the need to leave for another city, Burton asks his sister to replace him at the session. So Flynn gets into virtual reality and gets acquainted with the technology that changes human society. True, over time, the girl begins to doubt that this is just a game, and not a real portal to the future.

Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities

At the end of October, Netflix will release one of its biggest projects of the fall, Cabinet of Rarities. The famous master of fantasy and horror, Guillermo del Toro, selected several stories by Howard Lovecraft, Michael Shea and other masters of mystical horror and turned them into episodes of his anthology. And when it comes to mysticism, grotesque fantasy and the like, his taste can be trusted. On his account are both big-budget action films (Hellboy, Blade 2) and festival works (Pan’s Labyrinth and The Shape of Water, for which he received two Oscars). Two of the eight episodes, by the way, are based on original del Toro stories. Each episode was directed by different directors, including Guillermo Navarro (Hannibal series), Panos Cosmatos (Mandy), Vincenzo Natali (Cube), Jennifer Kent (The Babadook) and so on.

“End of the world”

In late October – early November, Kinopoisk will release the comedy “The End of the World” about the Prince of Darkness, who, in order to realize his plans, will have to renew relations with his son. The script was written by Alena Gulyashko, Anna Shlyakova and Vadim Sotnikov. But it is interesting that Adam Targum, the author of the Cinemax and HBO Max projects “Warrior”, “Banshee” and “Outcast” advised them at every stage of development in real time via video link. The director was the famous comedian Alexander Nezlobin, who already had a successful serial experience (“I’m Not Kidding”). According to the plot, the Prince of Darkness suddenly appears in Chertanovo. He has grandiose plans, but to realize them he needs the help of his son – a thirty-year-old supermarket cashier, who has a lot of questions for his father from the underworld. The almighty Prince of Darkness will have to build relationships with earthly relatives in order to fulfill his plan and teach a lesson to humanity. The main roles were played by Yuri Kolokolnikov, Semyon Treskunov and Ksenia Rappoport.
