Officials in Austin are being sued by the Texas Attorney General after their refusal to implement an order that removes the mandatory use maskacross the state, as he announced yesterday, Thursday.
Texas announced the lifting of this restriction – which provided for the mandatory use of the mask in public buildings and many outdoor areas in order to stop its spread coronavirus– on Wednesday, together with the end of the occupancy restrictions for businesses.
However, the city council in Austin, the state capital, voted to continue to make the use of the mask mandatory.
“I told Travis County and Austin City to comply with the state mask law. They ignored me. “So, once again, I’re taking them to court,” Attorney General Ken Paxton said in a Twitter post.
Austin is located in Travis County, as AMPE explains.
Many large retail chains, supermarkets and restaurants in Texas have said that will continue to require their customers to wear a mask.
That’s their right, Paxton said in a March 10 letter to Austin Mayor Steve Adler and Travis County Judge Travis Andy Brown. However, this decision “does not fall within the jurisdiction of Austin City or Travis County,” he added.
Adler said in an interview with MSNBC yesterday: “We think the mask is very important. Now is not the time to take risks. We have not advanced much yet. We are still fighting the virus. “
The death toll on USA due to the coronavirus pandemic exceeds 500,000, the highest of any single country. About 20% of the population has received at least one dose of the vaccine.
Texas was one of the first states in the United States to reopen its economy after the first wave of the pandemic last May.
