Th. Plevris: The pharmaceutical expenditure must be rationalized

“It is logical that there are complaints about the clawback because this is not a reasonable measure,” Health Minister Thanos Plevris said at the Delphi forum, talking about the forced returns that pharmaceutical companies charge every year in order to cover the extra cost for medicines. in addition to the closed budgets of EOPYY and hospitals.

It is characteristic that only for the outpatient pharmaceutical expenditure, the excess reached 820 million euros last year.

“There is a timeless responsibility of the State, as there was a certainty that the difference will be paid by the pharmaceutical industry,” said Mr. Plevris.

As he said, in order to rationalize the expenses of the medicine, the expenses and the consumption of the medicine will be controlled with a digital file, there will be instructions for the doctors for prescription and treatment protocols.

“The cost of this, which includes violent measures, must be rationalized,” he underlined.

One such measure, he explained, was the prescription of the uninsured by public structures, a decision that saved 150 million euros from EOPYY.

“By consultation there will be a framework to lay the groundwork for spending control,” he added.

For his part, the president of the Association of Pharmaceutical Companies of Greece, Olympios Papadimitriou, said that the minister has acknowledged that what has been done so far is focused on high pressure and over-taxation of the pharmaceutical industry.

He noted that in recent years the pharmaceutical industry has returned more than 10 billion euros, while last year the total returns for clawback and rebate will reach 1.9 billion.
