Thailand and Vietnam began negotiations in May. A Thai spokesman then said that the aim was to raise the price of its rice exports, increase its influence in the global market and increase farmers’ incomes.

The two countries account for about 10% of global paddy rice production and about 26% of global exports, according to the US Department of Agriculture.

It was not immediately clear when the price increases would take effect.
