Thailand approves same-sex marriage

Thailand’s Senate approved this Tuesday (18) the final reading of a marriage equality law, paving the way for the country to become the third territory in Asia to recognize same-sex couples, after Nepal and Taiwan.

The law won the support of almost all lawmakers in the Upper House and will be sent to the palace for royal approval. The law will come into force 120 days after its publication in the Royal Gazette.

LGBTQ+ advocates considered the measure a “monumental advance” as it would make Thailand the first country in Southeast Asia to enact legislation on the issue.

Thailand is already known for its vibrant LGBTQ+ culture and tolerance, making it a popular destination for tourists.

“This would underline Thailand’s leadership in the region in promoting human rights and gender equality,” said the Civil Society Commission for Marriage Equality, Activists and LGBTI+ Couples.

The bill is the result of more than a decade of efforts by activists and politicians, after previous bills failed to reach parliament.

In early June, thousands of revelers and LGBTQ+ activists paraded through the streets of Bangkok and joined Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, who wore a rainbow shirt to celebrate Pride Month.
