Thailand Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said Bangkok a “emergency zone” after a strong earthquake reacted the neighboring Mianmar country.
A large building collapsed in the Chatuchak Park area, one of the oldest in the city, killing a person, damage was reported throughout the municipality.
Shinawatra “immediately instructed the Interior Ministry to declare Bangkok an emergency zone and notify provinces across the country to treat the situation as a national emergency, allowing immediate public assistance if necessary,” according to a statement from the prime minister’s office.
An unknown number of people remain stuck under the rubble after the building of the building in the capital, according to Thai authorities.
“The prime minister is returning to Bangkok immediately and asks the public to avoid high buildings, use only stairs and remain calm,” the statement continued. “All government agencies were informed, and schools were instructed to send children home earlier.”
The government warned that more tremors may occur in the next 24 hours. A strong secondary tremor of magnitude 6.4 reached Myanmar after the initial earthquake of magnitude 7.7.
