Thailand's election commission is calling for the dissolution of the main opposition party

Thailand's election commission announced today that it will ask the kingdom's Constitutional Court to proceed with the dissolution of the progressive opposition Move Forward Party (MFP), which won the most seats in parliament in last May's election. The committee said in a statement that it had “unanimously” decided to call for the dissolution of the party because of its campaign promise to relax the very strict legislation on so-called crimes of dedication against the monarchy. The MFP upset the Thai political establishment in last May's parliamentary elections. The rise of this reformist formation has awakened old divisions in Thailand, where power remains in the hands of financial and military elites linked to the monarchy, despite hopes for change expressed at the polls by younger generations.
