That’s why royalty in Ascot wear a name tag with their names

Princess Anne of England she certainly needs no introduction, yet she too, like other members of the royal family, at the inauguration of the Royal Ascot 2021 had on his chest a green tag with his name on it. Nothing strange. It is one of many traditions of Britain’s most glamorous and anticipated horse racing tournament. The badges with the names signal the admission of the Windsors to the exclusive “Royal Box”. In addition to Anna, the prince showed them off during the races Edoardo, Sophie di Wessex, Zara Phillips e Mike Tindall. As he points out People, it is a rather bizarre custom: the members of the Royal family are “quite recognizable,” writes the American tabloid ironically. But that doesn’t mean they can’t (or should) wear their badges.

With some exceptions. On the first day of racing, the prince Carlo and his wife Camilla they presented the trophy without the badge. Also Kate Middletonin the past, the plate with his name was not always pinned to his chest. Same choice for Meghan Markle: on her Ascot debut in June 2018, Prince Harry’s wife held the green tag in her hand, along with her clutch.

as to Elizabeth II, for her it is normal practice not to wear a badge. The sovereign, so far, has not been seen in Ascot. On the first day of competition, on the other hand, she was engaged in an official meeting, at Windsor Castle, with Prime Minister of Australia Scott Morrison. But one of his horses, King’s Lynn, entered the competition. His Majesty is unlikely to be satisfied with watching him gallop through a TV screen. Last year it could not have done otherwise: Royal Ascot, for the first time in 309 years of history, due to Covid, took place behind closed doors. This year, however, there has been a return to face-to-face races (even if, due to health restrictions, the event has only granted tickets to 12,000 lucky ones). The Queen this time did not “open the dance”, as tradition dictates, with the parade in the carriage. But his passion for racing is known to all. And everyone is confident that The Queen will make an appearance at Berkshire racecourse in the next few days.
