With the awards season just past, both for the small and the big screen, we are starting to peek at new projects and compelling stories. It is, however, the perfect time to retrieve titles that were too hastily released in theaters or from the repertoire. Some are a real feast for the eyes, others are all to laugh and then, of course, the blockbusters that bring the cinema straight home cannot be missing.
After the home video releases in February, March and April, already full of special and limited edition box sets, unpublished content and increasingly original packaging, here is the decalogue of DVD and Blu-Ray (some very collectible) coming in May.

Red
The new feature film from the house of Mickey Mouse stages the metaphor of growth by comparing it to a red panda. The intuition comes from Oscar-winning director Domee Shi, who for her story was inspired by the same experience and relationship she had with her mother as a girl. At the center of the story is the thirteen-year-old Mei Lee, who frequents a small group of friends a little on the fringes of school life. She is very passionate about the boyband of the moment, she wants to convince her parents to participate in the concert with her clique, but thus the first generational squabbles begin. When strong emotions are unleashed in her, a red giant panda appears in her place.

Cyrano
Joe Wright’s masterpiece, which earned Italian costume designer Massimo Parrini Cantini an Oscar nomination, stages a literary classic in a musical version, redefining the metaphor of diversity. Haley Bennett plays Roxanne while Peter Dinklage gives life to Mr. de Bergerac, an expert in word and sword duels. He is in love with her friend but cannot confess it to her, on the other hand he puts on paper the sighs of her heart for soldier Christian (Kelvin Harrison). In a visual jubilation to say the least breathtaking – recreated in Sicily – the protagonists embody all the nuances of the human soul, from the most lyrical to the most prosaic feelings.

Belfast
This poignant autobiographical story, written and directed by Kenneth Branagh, is set in the capital of Northern Ireland in the 1960s where a working-class family comes to terms with the turmoil of the place, the Ulster district. Her father is a carpenter played by Jamie Dornan, often absent for work, while her mother (Caitriona Balfe) stays at home with her children and grandparents (Judi Dench and Ciaran Hinds). The youngest child, Buddy (Jude Hill) is nine years old and does not fully realize how much the dimension of the game is totally reversed by the urban riots. Little by little, however, he realizes that religious differences create mistrust and hatred and the carefree childhood is broken forever.
The visual power of the tale has earned it seven nominations at the Oscar Prize (a statuette was won for the original screenplay) and in the home video version the special contents include the commentary of the director-screenwriter, the behind the scenes of the film and the in-depth study The child who is in each of us.
