“You have to accept your child for who he is.” This quote by Nina Green sums up the story of 16-year-old Korben who wanted to go to the school dance in a skirt. And he went. And his mom not only had no second thoughts about her son’s choice, but proudly uploaded to Twitter photos of him, causing a great wave of support.
“At 12 my son announced that he wanted to go to the prom in a dress. Four years later he made it a reality. I’m so proud of him for being honest with himself and for his acceptance from the whole school,” she wrote.
Korben wore a crimson jacket, white shirt, bow tie and a crimson long skirt. When he arrived at his school in Harleston, Norfolk, in the east of England, he was greeted with applause from his classmates and his teachers were moved to tears by the minors’ support for diversity. “It sends a message: you can be whoever you want to be,” the teenager said, while his mother added: “he got out of the car, everyone was cheering and I was crying, some of the teachers were crying, because that’s who he wanted to be.”
The mother’s tweet was retweeted more than 4,000 times and one retweet was from Korben’s idol, “RuPaul’s Drag Race” reality star Michelle Visage, who called the 16-year-old a “star.” The boy was amazed by the support he received. “It’s so surreal that Visage has shared my photos. For me she is an idol, a wonderful celebrity, I really admire her,” said Korben.
The displays of love continued when Korben and his mother went to Pride parade. “Someone in the parade recognized him, approached him and said ‘are you the boy in the red dress?’ I think you’re amazing”.
As his mother points out, the 16-year-old has always loved dresses and from an early age did various sketches as the “sassy drag queen, Miss Frou Frou”. When it came time for the dance he wanted to leave her at home, though. “He wanted to go as Korben, expressing his feminine side, wearing a tux on top and a skirt underneath, clearly influenced by the American actor Billy Porter,” said his mother.
“Oh my god! So much love, thank you! Thank you to everyone who supports me and her LGBTQIA+ community,” tweeted Korben under the moniker Miss Frou Frou.
Oh my goodness… the amount of love… THANK YOU!! Thank you to everyone who is not only supportive of me but supports the LGBTQIA+ community! Thank you for spreading love!❤️🔥⭐️🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️#blacklivesmatter https://t.co/pOWbDMbVXs

We recall that Porter she has made many public appearances wearing dresses or women’s bodysuits, wanting in this way to honor the LGBTQIA+ community.

“I wanted to show him that he can live his life the way he wantssays his mother, who could not have imagined that such a self-evident attitude for her would bring such a great wave of love. “I’m happy for him,” she says, noting that she’s gotten messages from other parents asking for advice on how they can support their own children’s diversity.
“I just wanted to show parents who are in the same situation that it’s ok. It is important to show our support to those who do not have it. I want to believe that our case will show others that they can accept the different. I want to tell parents to be proud of their children. They are not alone in all this. They can rejoice, celebrate with them. And to the young people I want to say that there is a support network out there if they need it. You need to accept your children for who they are,” says Nina Green.
Wow! When I posted images of my son being true to himself I never expected it to get the response it has. The support & positivity has been overwhelming & have totally drowned out the few negative ones which we take no notice of. It’s his life & I’m letting him live it ♥️ pic.twitter.com/1gq1VKygwx
