The 18 fishermen imprisoned in Libya have returned to Mazara del Vallo

After 108 days of imprisonment in Libya they have finally returned home. THE 18 fishermen – eight Italians, six Tunisians, two Indonesians and two Senegalese – kidnapped e released on December 17th, following the visit of the Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte, and the Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maio, to Benghazi – where they met General Khalifa Haftar, commander of the self-proclaimed Libyan National Army (LNA) – they disembarked this morning at the new port of Mazara del Vallo, escorted by the frigate Carlo Margottini.

They had left Benghazi on Friday night aboard the two fishing boats Medinea and Antartite, sailing for about 50 hours. Upon their arrival on the Mazara quay, the authorities and their families were waiting for them, before being able to embrace them again. they had to wait for the results of medical checks carried out directly on board by the medical staff.
The fishermen they were also subjected to a double swab, fast and molecular, in the gazebos set up at the port and carried out by four health workers from the Usca dell’Asp of Trapani. The results, which arrived around 11.30, attested the negativity of all 18 fishermen at Covid-19, which they were thus able to reach their homes where they will have to observe a period of quarantine, as they come from a non-Schengen country.
