OBESITY AND COVID
One problem that with the pandemic it is getting worse because you go out less and eat more at home, with very serious consequences.

Obesity is not just a matter of weight or body mass: it is the first triggering cause of disease like diabetes, cholesterol, cancer and so it is a serious risk factor also for Covid-19 mortality. According to data from the World Obesity Federation obese people who contracted Coronavirus were 113% more likely to be hospitalized, 74% more to be hospitalized in intensive care and 48% more to die, compared to normal weight patients.

THE VALTER LONGO FOUNDATION
The forecasts do not give hope for a better future: “In 2030, we risk seeing a doubling of the prevalence of obesity, which added to the overweight, will make up about 70% of the population, with a huge clinical and economic impact “, says Antonluca Matarazzo, General Director of the Valter Longo Onlus Foundation. It is the foundation created at the behest of the professor Valter Longo, director of the Oncology and Longevity program of the IFOM (Firc Institute of Molecular Oncology) of Milan and of the Longevity Institute of the University of Southern California, the first in Italy dedicated to guaranteeing a long and healthy life to everyone, especially disadvantaged and poor people through proper nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.

Because obesity, as well as being the result of poor nutrition, is a social disease: for years the statistics have continued to remind us that in our country the areas in which most of the obese are concentrated, children above all, are those of the South or in any case of more disadvantaged areas, with data that change considerably even just based on the neighborhood within the same city. For this reason, the Valter Longo Onlus Foundation, with its team of biologists, nutritionists and educators, has been active for some time with initiatives dedicated to prevention, even in schools.

THE VADEMECUM TO LIVE BETTER
Particularly for this world day spread a vademecum that we should all keep in mind: 5 basic rules to remind us that a mainly plant-based diet devoid of foods rich in sugars or fats, which also includes fasting remains the main way to live better. You can find them in the gallery above, with the advice of Romina Cervigni, Nutritionist and Scientific Director of the Valter Longo Onlus Foundation.
