The 5 dog breeds that have the lowest life expectancy

If the average life expectancy of a dog is around 11 yearsthe life expectancy of a puppy at birth varies greatly depending on the breed. A VetCompass™ study from Royal Veterinary College English, who analyzed the average lifespan of 18 different dog breeds and mixed breedsanalyzing data relating to deaths from 2016 to 2020 in the United Kingdom, for a total of 30,563 dogs.

The study, extremely accurate, indicates an average life expectancy of dogs which stands at 11.41 years for females and 11.07 for maleswith a longer life expectancy of neutered and spayed dogs compared to intact ones.

But the results also speak of a large difference in life expectancy according to the different races: if in fact the Jack Russell Terriers and the Yorkshire Terriers have the highest life expectancy at birth – 12.72 years and 12.54 years respectively – the French Bulldog has a life expectancy at birth of just 4.53 years.

The French Bulldog has the significantly lowest life expectancy at birth, just 4.53 years old. This small molossioid was selected and bred in France in the 19th century as a fighting dog against rats, and then for its morphological and character characteristics.

In general, the study confirms, It is precisely the barachycephalic breeds, i.e. those selected by man to have a flat face (which however causes breathing difficulties), which have the lowest life expectancies. As we have underlined several times, before choosing these dog (and cat) breeds, you should think about what life they can lead, including difficulty breathing, heart and circulation problems. If in fact the dog with a shorter life expectancy is the French Bulldog, 4.53 years oldis followed by English Bulldog with an expectation of 7.39 years, from Pug with 7.65 years, from the American Bulldog with 7.79 and from the Chihuahua with 7.91 years.
