The 50 best destinations in the world in 2022, according to TIME magazine

Prepare your credit card and access your favorite booking platforms: the American magazine and the news site “TEAM” just released your list of the 50 best places in the world in 2022.

The list was compiled by its international network of correspondents and contributors and, says TIME in a statement, “who had his eye on those offering new and exciting experiences”.

The 50 destinations include both classic blockbusters and lesser-explored spots, but what unites them is that they are “thriving, growing and changing” says TIME, “tracing a path to economic recovery” and “investing in sustainability.”

North America

In the US, TIME is recommending the hip West Coast hubs of Portland, Oregon and San Francisco, the cool coastal Florida of Miami and Detroit, Michigan. Winter ski destination Park City, Utah also gets a nod.

In Canada, Ontario’s capital, Toronto, and the small surfer town of Tofino, British Columbia, are the choices, and further north again, Illuissat, on mainland Greenland, opens onto Disko Bay, the “Grand Canyon of Arctic Circle”.

The ever-popular beach destinations of Jamaica and Mexico’s Riviera Nayarit are also on the 2022 list.

South America

The city of Salta, in Argentina’s mountainous northwest, and the village of El Chaltén, in the country’s Los Glaciares National Park, caught TIME’s attention this year.

Chile’s Rapa Nui – better known as Easter Island – and Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands are two volcanic wonders that made the list.

The bustling metropolises of Bogotá, Colombia, and São Paulo, Brazil, are two more of TIME’s urban recommendations.

In Britain, the bucolic charms of the English county of Devon and the town of Portree, on the Scottish Isle of Skye, stand out.

The Western European cities of Marseille (France), Copenhagen (Denmark), Skellefteå (Sweden) and Valencia (Spain) also appear.

Then there is the Italian region of Calabria, the ancient Greek city of Thessaloniki, the Portuguese region of Alentejo and the archipelago of Madeira.

The small Czech ski resort of Dolni Morava and the Lithuanian fortress town of Kaunas make the list, as does the historic splendor of the Turkish capital Istanbul.

Asia Pacific

Kerala and Ahmedabad, India, are among the Asian recommendations, as are the Japanese islands of Setouchi and Kyushu.

The South Korean capital of Seoul is one of the top tips, as is the Indonesian province of Bali and the central island of Boracay in the Philippines.

Australia’s Great Barrier Reef and the port city of Fremantle were chosen, as was Queenstown, New Zealand, a hub for adventure sports on the South Island.

Finally, Bhutan’s Trans-Bhutan Trail and Uzbekistan’s historic Silk Roads are some of the less traveled terrain in this year’s picks.

Middle East

Qatar and its capital Doha stand out this year for hosting the 2022 World Cup in December while the emerging adventure ports destination of Ras Al Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates, too.

Africa

The Kenyan capital of Nairobi and the Rwandan capital of Kigali are TIME’s urban choices in Africa. Franschhoek of South Africa, known for its wineries, and Zambia’s Lower Zambezi National Park are also recommended.

Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park is the continent’s ultimate selection.

For the more intrepid travelers, “TIME” picks for 2022 also include the Arctic polar region and the International Space Station, which only makes the list criteria for being in low Earth orbit.
