A new world record ratified by the World Meteorological Organization (PMO) on Thursday (July 31) for the biggest lightning ever recorded. It is an 829 -kilometer -long “megacinos”, which occurred on October 22, 2017, during a strong storm in the area of the Great Plains of the United States. The electric discharge extended from East Texas to near Kansas City – a distance corresponding to that between Paris and Venice. To cover this distance, a car would take 8-9 hours and a passenger aircraft about 90 minutes. According to PMO, the recognition of the record was now done, thanks to the advanced satellite technologies now used to monitor weather events. The discovery of this lightning emerged through a re -examination of the storm data, as it was not identified in the original analysis.
