Brazilian teacher, grammarian and philologist Evanildo Bechara died on Thursday (22), at the age of 97, at Placi Hospital in Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro. Death was due to multiple organ failure.
The academic occupied chair number 33 of the Brazilian Academy of Letters (GLA) since 2001. Bechara has been a full professor and emeritus of institutions such as the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), the Fluminense Federal University (UFF) and international universities, such as Coimbra, Portugal, and Colonia, Germany.
The Brazilian Academy of Letters lamented the death of Evanildo Bechara on his social networks. “We said goodbye to one of the biggest names in education and Brazilian linguistics, but its legacy is immortal,” the gym said.
Bechara was born in Recife, Pernambuco, in 1928, and published fundamental works for the Portuguese language. Among the best known publications are: “Modern Portuguese Grammar”, “Portuguese Lessons for Syntactic Analysis” and “First Essays on Portuguese Language”, which was a scientific work.

Evanildo Bechara was considered the greatest specialist in Portuguese language, from the Brazilian Academy of Letters (GLA), in which he was a teacher of members. The academic was the Brazilian representative in the spelling reform made with Portugal, and also a teacher in the state of Rio de Janeiro.
Bechara actively contributed to the research and teaching of the Portuguese language around the world. In his book “Modern Portuguese Grammar – 40th Edition” (Nova Fronteira Publisher), Evanildo Bechara highlighted and explained the correct uses of the crossbar.
