The activity of criminals has sharply increased in Telegram: WhatsApp is to blame

Various cybercriminals and scammers have been using the Telegram messenger for communication for years, since it is completely encrypted and safe for their activities. However, in its recently published study, The Financial Times reports that recently, cybercrime activity on Telegram has grown by 100%. Journalists of the publication believe that such a sharp increase in the activity of fraudsters is directly related to the fact that another popular messenger WhatsApp changed its privacy policy – now it is too dangerous for cybercriminals to use this application.

The fact is that relatively recently, the developers of WhatsApp literally forced their users to adopt a new revised policy, which implies the transfer of user data to the parent company Facebook. Naturally, many users were outraged by this event, although WhatsApp stated that they still could not read users’ private messages. However, not everyone believed this statement, and for cybercriminals, of course, privacy and security are in the first place. And in order not to risk their freedom, the scammers went to competitors.

Thanks to the high level of security, hackers, for example, can easily sell hacked emails (logins and passwords) – with a quick search, you can find databases with hundreds of thousands of hacked accounts, game profiles and more. Cybercriminals are also actively selling various financial information on Telegram – credit card numbers, copies of passports, various insider data, and even hacking tools. Moreover, cyber threat analysts believe that Telegram is in many ways even more convenient than the darknet, since everyone has access to the messenger.
