The amendment for subsidizing electricity bills and taxing electricity generators in Parliament

LAST UPDATE: 09.41

The amendment for the extraordinary financial support of up to 600 euros of electricity consumers, as well as for the imposition of an extraordinary contribution to the electricity producers, was submitted to the Parliament on Tuesday night.

These are measures recently announced by the government in the context of the “package” of consumer aid in the face of increases in the cost of electricity.

According to the amendment, the beneficiaries of the financial aid are natural persons with a net family income of 2020 up to 45,000 Euros, for the consumption account of the main residence and the residence of the students studying inside, with floating supply invoices, for the period 1.12.2021 – 31.5.2022.

The aid corresponds to 60% of the increase in electricity bills after deducting the discounts granted by the suppliers and the subsidy from the State. The grant will be deposited in a bank account of the choice of the beneficiary who will have to submit an application in a special application that will be created in the digital portal gov.gr by the Information Society.

In relation to the special levy for electricity generators, the amendment provides that it will concern the increased profitability (gross margin) of the period from October 1, 2021 to June 30, 2022. The additional profits, after deducting the discounts and refunds granted to final consumers (through affiliated suppliers) will be taxed at 90%. The amount of the contribution will be calculated by the Energy Regulatory Authority per producer with a methodology that will be determined by a Ministerial Decision and will be deposited in the Energy Transition Fund.
