United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres announced on Friday the appointment of Maria Achela Olgin from Colombia as a personal envoy to the Cyprus issue. Following the informal meeting on the Cyprus issue in an expanded composition, held in Geneva on March 17 and 18, the Secretary General asked Mrs Olgin “to reconnect with the parties involved to work for the next steps in the Cyprus issue and to advise him”. Mrs Olgin had completed her previous mission as a personal envoy of the Secretary-General from January to July 2024. According to the office of the Secretary-General, Mrs Olgin has extensive diplomatic experience at the highest level, including her term as Minister of Foreign Affairs (2010).
