The Australian government has imposed sanctions and travel bans on the two daughters of Russian President Vladimir Putin and the daughter of Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, according to a statement issued today.
The decision follows similar moves by other Western countries, including the United States and Britain, and raises the total number of individuals and entities in Russia subject to Australian sanctions to nearly 750.
The Australian government has not named Putin’s two daughters but it is known that the Russian president has two adult daughters, Katerina Tikhonova and Maria Vorontsova. The statement added that President Putin and Lavrov had been added to the sanctions list on February 27.
The new round of sanctions also targets 144 Russian senators who supported President Putin, endorsing the “illegal” recognition as independent of the breakaway regions of Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine on February 22, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Foreign Minister Marisa Payne added that Australia would continue to raise the price for Russia by targeting those responsible for the “unjustified and unprovoked attack on Ukraine”.
