The Balearic Islands have 32,700 more unemployed than a year ago and reached 87,000

The Active Population Survey (EPA) counts about 87,000 unemployed in the third quarter in the Balearic Islands, which represents 9.45% less than in the previous quarter, with 9,200 fewer unemployed, but a rise of 59.2% compared to a year before, with 32,700 bad stops.

The Balearic Islands thus lead the year-on-year increase in unemployment in the Communities, according to data published this Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), which nevertheless ranks the Balearic Islands as the region with the highest activity rate (64.6%).

The INE recalls that those affected by a Temporary Employment Regulation File (ERTE) with suspension of employment are considered employed, according to the methodology of the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) and the International Labor Organization (ILO) that is applied in the EPA.

The active population of the Balearic Islands grew by 52,500 people in the third quarter (8.6%) to stand at 661,800 active people, although it decreased 1.95% year-on-year (13,200 people).

With different intensity, the behavior is similar in all the Autonomous Communities: employment increased in the months of July to September compared to the April-June period (marked by the state of alarm and the economic stoppage), but it fell when compared to the year ± or above.

The quarterly increase in employment in the Community stands out, with 61,700 more employed persons, up to 573,900. This represents an increase of 12%, the highest of the CCAA, followed by Cantabria and Murcia.

However, in the comparison between 2019 and 2020, The Balearic Islands score the second largest relative decline in employment (-7.4%, with 45,900 fewer people employed), behind the Canary Islands.

With this data, the unemployment rate in the region stands at 13.2%, below the national average, which is 16.2%. The unemployment rate is lower in the Balearic Islands among women (12.6%) than among men (13.8%), but their activity rate (60.7%) is below theirs ( 68.6%).

The unemployment rate for people under 25 years of age stands at 38.7% in the Balearic Islands, somewhat below the national average (40.4%), and is 8.4% for people over 55 years of age , compared to 12.07% national.

THE UNEMPLOYMENT IN THE SERVICES SECTOR IS FIRED BY 164%

By sectors, unemployment in the services sector in the Balearic Islands soared 164% compared to last year, reaching 52,000 unemployed (32,300 more than a year earlier). However, it improved compared to the previous quarter, with 12,400 fewer unemployed. Regarding employment, services totaled 474,200 workers in the third quarter, 42,500 less than a year earlier.

In construction, on the other hand, unemployment fell both quarterly and year-on-year. This sector counted 8,200 unemployed a year ago and in the third quarter of 2020 there were about 6,000.

The opposite happens in the Balearic industry, where unemployment rises so much compared to the previous quarter (the difference is 1,000 more unemployed) as with the data from a year earlier (600 more unemployed).

MORE PERCENTAGE OF WOMEN WITH HIGHER EDUCATION

EPA data show that 36.4% of the workforce has higher education, a percentage that rises to 41.5% among women, compared to 31.7% among men.

On the other hand, 3% of the working population has only primary education (and 0.7% has incomplete primary education) and 0.5% is illiterate.

GENERAL DATA

In Spain as a whole, unemployment increased by 355,000 people in the third quarter of the year, which is 10.5% more than in the previous quarter, and employment grew by 569,600 jobs ( + 3%), its highest quarterly increase in the entire historical series.

The increase in unemployment during the July-September period is the highest since the first quarter of 2012, while the creation of jobs with the arrival of the ‘new normal’ set a record figure and allowed the recovery of more than half of the job lost in the previous quarter.

At the end of September, the total number of unemployed stood at 3,722,900, and the number of employed, at 19,176,900 people, an occupation level similar to that of the first quarter of 2018.
