The Bank of Russia is ready to start a pilot program of the digital ruble

The Deputy Chairman of the Bank of Russia Olga Skorobogatova announced that testing of the state digital currency will begin in January 2022.

Olga Skorobogatova, First Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation
reported that the development of a prototype platform for the state digital currency has been completed. Pilot tests of the Central Bank’s digital currency are scheduled for early 2022. Skorobogatova clarified that the first stage of testing will begin in the first working days of January.

“The prototype of the digital ruble platform is ready. Immediately after the January holidays, we begin piloting the operations of the first stage with 12 banks. ”

At the same time, the deputy chairman of the Central Bank did not specify which banks will take part in testing the state digital currency. It is likely that 12 Russian banks will participate in the pilot project, which have expressed a desire to take part in testing the digital currency of the Central Bank of Russia. The list includes: Ak Bars, Alfa-Bank, Dom.RF, VTB, Gazprombank, Tinkoff, Promsvyazbank, Rosbank, Sberbank, SKB-Bank, Soyuz and Transcapitalbank.

In November, the Governor of the Bank of Russia Elvira Nabiullina said that testing of the digital ruble would begin in January and last until the end of 2022. During this year, the regulator will make a final decision on the advisability of issuing a national digital currency. At the same time, the State Duma of the Russian Federation fears the risks of introducing the digital ruble. The parliamentary committees believe that banks and the country’s information security will suffer from the introduction of the state digital currency. Recall that according to the Center for Geoeconomics of the Atlantic Council, Russia is one of the countries that are “stuck” at the stage of researching the state digital currency.
