The Barcelona concert experiment: No indication of virus transmission in live rock with 5,000 people

PCR tests performed on all those who attended the concert fifteen days later showed that “there is no evidence that there was a transmission during the event and that was the aim of the study,” said Josep Maria Libre, his doctor at Trias i Pujol Hospital in Badalona, ​​during a press conference.

Participants underwent antigen testing prior to the concert and wore FFP2 masks.

According to the doctor, only 6 positive incidents were detected among the 5,000 spectators fifteen days after the concert and the organizers are sure that “for four of the six incidents, the broadcast did not take place during the concert”.

“With optimal ventilation, antigen testing and mask use, we can guarantee a safe environment,” he said.

In addition to FFP2 tests and masks, ventilation as well as accessibility to specific areas such as toilets were strictly controlled.

The experiment, one of the few in Europe, was organized by festival organizers and the Germans Trias i Pujol hospital who wanted to prove that concerts were possible despite the pandemic. Another test concert was organized in early March in the Netherlands with the participation of 1,300 people.

“Once again, Barcelona and the Barcelona culture are pioneers in an unprecedented situation in which we must safeguard cultural activity with all health precautions,” said Zaume Colboni, Barcelona’s deputy mayor, in an interview. the results of the experiment.

“It is possible to relax the restrictions and combine them with cultural activities that need to be restarted,” he added.

“People had their eyes on us, a lot of people were asking us how we did it,” explained Angels Ponza, Culture’s director at the local Catalan government.

As early as December, the same team of researchers had organized a pilot program in a Barcelona room with 500 spectators who had previously passed a test. A few days later, no one was infected with the coronavirus.
