The “battle” of the political leaders over surveillance is in plenary session

The political leaders are coming to the plenary today, Friday, following the request of the president of SYRIZA, Alexis Tsipras, for a pre-scheduled discussion on the subject of “surveillance by the Prime Minister’s EYP, political opponents and journalists”. Alexis Tsipras submitted a request for a discussion of political leaders, after the revelations that the president of PASOK – Movement for Change, Nikos Androulakis and the journalist Thanasis Koukakis were targets of surveillance.

Today’s discussion of the political leaders is being held despite the fact that opposition parties have requested that they be informed in advance of the Committee on Institutions and Transparency by the new governor of the EYP Themistoklis Demiris, the former administrator of the EYP Panagiotis Kontoleontas, the prosecutor responsible for the EYP Vassiliki Vlachos, the former General Secretary of the Prime Minister Grigoris Dimitriadis and the president of ADAE Christos Rammos.

This request was made on request and after the hearing of the new head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Themistocles Demiris, in the context of the Institutions and Transparency Committee’s opinion on his appointment, during which Mr. Demiris reportedly stated, according to opposition parties, that “no one is excluded a priori”, from monitoring. It was preceded by a statement by the government representative Yiannis Oikonomou that the government and the prime minister are not aware of any other surveillance. In this climate, all the opposition parties are expected today to call on the prime minister to state why the EYP was monitoring Nikos Androulakis and which other political figures have probably become surveillance targets.

Today’s discussion is a single step in the road map of the investigation that will evolve within the framework of the procedures provided by the Regulation, for the monitoring of Nikos Androulakis. The next step will be taken next Monday, when the PASOK-KINAL proposal for the formation of an inquiry committee will be put to the plenary session and while the Institutions Committee’s decision on when and how it will act on its part is also pending .

The political leaders’ debate has been set for 11 and will open with the speech of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
