The beautiful story of Maria Zulima, the only (adoptive) daughter of Lina Wertmüller

Lina Wertmüller, who died yesterday at the age of 93, was married for forty-four years with the artist and set designer Enrico Job, struck down in 2008 by fulminant leukemia. The couple did not have biological children. So when thirty years ago the baby girl arrived in their house Maria Zulima, the news ended up in all the newspapers. And also in court. Lina was 62 at the time. The photos of the mature new mother with the baby in her arms led Anfaa (National Association of Foster Families) to submit a complaint to the Public Prosecutor’s Office for the minors of Brescia because it was thought of a rented uterus or irregular adoption.

Things were different. Maria Zulima was the natural daughter of Enrico Job. Born from one of his extramarital affair, as the set designer explained in an interview with Republic: “It was an unimportant fling. I wouldn’t have confessed anything to Lina. But the child’s birth mother did not want to know. I had a great deal of labor thinking about the possible abortion. In the end, I took the baby home to me “. And Wertmüller lived “a second youth as an adoptive mother“. Actually Lina has always talked about Mauci – so they affectionately called her at home – rejecting the label of adoptive mother: “Maria is the daughter of Job and therefore she is my daughter. It was born of our love. Life is unpredictable. Becoming parents was great».

As a child, Maria Zulima appeared in several parents’ films, such as Ferdinando and Carolina from 1999, Stuffed peppers and fish in the face from 2004, Damn the misery! from 2009: «The girl who crawls in I hope I manage and she”, said the director in an interview with Corriere della Sera. “But as she grows up, she’s not interested in acting… ». Cinema is not among his interests but of course Maucì was by his mother’s side when he received the prestigious award at the 2020 Oscars Lifetime Achievement Award. One of the very rare occasions in which we have seen them in public together.

Maria Zulima, who is now thirty years old and lives in Rome with her partner Alessandro Santoni, on social media he also loves to share the happy moments of his childhood. In a recent post a photo immortalizes her as a child, and smiling, with her mom and dad. In support, a touching caption: “Ohana means family, and family means that no one is abandoned or forgotten».
