The sector represented by the professional aesthetic centers and the cosmetic industry has come together to show the firm commitment to the safety of the aesthetic centers, workers and clients and defend and claim their future, after s that in Catalonia aesthetic centers remain closed due to the restrictions derived from the pandemic.
Aesthetics centers have defended their commitment to safety through the application of hygienic-sanitary measures through the campaign “to continue caring for your skin”. In addition, during the first phase of the pandemic, a joint security protocol was developed that was presented to the Health Authorities, and thanks to the application of which no outbreaks or Covid-19 infection have been reported in this area of services. “The treatment protocols already included some of the current measures derived from Covid-19 (single-use products, hygiene in booths …), now we have readapted and multiplied the security measures,” says Jose R. Giner , CEO of the Germaine de Capuccini Group, a benchmark in the sector.
The health and economic crisis has seriously impacted a sector struggling to survive. It is mostly made up of small businesses that base their activity on personalization, individualized treatment and single-use materials, and have made significant investments to adapt to the new situation.
The impact created by the decision of the Generalitat to keep the beauty centers of Catalonia closed puts the economic future of many of these establishments and their workers, mostly women, at risk. The most recent confirmation of confidence in this sector has been the announcement of the measures in the Principality of Asturias, which has kept the beauty centers open. The sector trusts that the recognition of these professional women will be maintained in all the autonomous regions.
In Spain there are about 30,000 beauty centers (beauty centers, spas, beauty salons in hairdressers), which generate employment for 87,000 workers. In Catalonia there are slightly more than 3,000 professional beauty centers that employ 10,000 people. According to the estimates made by Stanpa, the losses in the sector in Catalonia amount to around 10 million euros for each closing week, in addition to the dramatic effect on employment.
“The professional aesthetics sector has a strong social commitment, the reality is that 95% of professionals are women, so there is a risk of worsening the existing economic gap for women”, Giner says.
