The beginnings as a tennis player, the love with Anthony Delon, the role of Dalida: portrait of Sveva Alviti, godmother of Venice 2024

Sveva Alviti, who recently turned 40, is the Godmother of the Venice Film Festival: will open the edition on Wednesday 28 August, on the stage of the Sala Grande of the Palazzo del Cinema on the Lido, in the inauguration ceremony, and will lead the closing ceremony on Saturday 7 September, when the Lions and the other official awards of the Festival will be announced.

And to think she was a tennis player. A “good but fragile” tennis playerhe recalls in an interview with Seven.

She was Roman until she was 17: with his mother, father and a sister named Sara he lived in Monteverdea beautiful bourgeois neighborhood built on the hill to the right of the Tiber. «Tennis has been my delight and my cross. I liked playing, but lately I no longer had the joy of doing it. I went into crisis when I played with those who, in the rankings, were less strong than me. The possibility of losing to them derailed me”. So one day, after a particularly difficult match that he nevertheless won, he decided to leave tennis.

Even today, as an established actress, she says she always has it at hand jeans and t-shirt and that the Texan boots («I have them in all colors») are her passion. Then, however, after putting away her tennis shoes, she put on high-heeled ones and tried to participate in modeling competitionswinning them all. He finally found himself with a contract in his hand with a New York agency («Naomi Campbell’s to be clear»): «I was 17. I left, I left everything, including school».

Like all beginnings, it wasn’t easy at all, also because she was very young: “I found myself alone. They put me in an apartment where there was only a bed on the floor and little else. I celebrated my 18th birthday alone“. They were 3 difficult years but they were enlightened at a certain point by the discovery of something that made her really happy: acting. «A friend of mine invited me to go to a course held by Susan Batson, one of the most important theatre coaches in New York, and there a whole new world opened up to me».

Thus began the chapter that most fascinates him: «I have always been shy, but getting into characters gave me an intimate, immense freedom.». While working in fashion, she continued to study acting and her Broadway debut came soon: in 2009 she starred in the theatrical show The Interrogation.
He understood that it was the right time to go home.: «I had a boyfriend that I then left and returned to Rome. When I set foot in my room, I realized that I was a different person. I had suffered, but now I was stronger, more centered, more aware.».

He began to work continuously between cinema and TV. In 2011 he participated in the 68th edition of the Venice Film Festival with the short film Alice by Roberto de Paolis. In 2012 he was in the cast of the film Nothing can stop us by Luigi Cecinelli and in that of Good morning Dad by Edoardo Leo. The following year she was one of the protagonists of the film Cam Girls directed by Mirca Viola. But the role that consecrated her was that of Dalida, in Lisa Azuelos’ 2017 biopicwhich earned her a nomination for best emerging actress at the 2018 César Awards: «I arrive at the final audition. The director asks me to sing a song by Dalida. I had prepared a strong piece, I am sickand I shouted it with all the strength and desperation my soul could produce. After that song the director hugged me and told me that the role was mine. That for her I was me, her Dalida.». She got the part beating out Laetitia Casta and Penélope Cruz, who were not exactly unknowns.

That role brought her a lot of other work, several successes, but Dalida remained on her for a long time. He told in an interview with Republic: «I feel similar to her in her need to give and to be loved, in her strength and in her fragility.. She was a more modern woman than the era she lived in. When I filmed the suicide scene for twelve hours I came home upset. For me life is the greatest thing».

As he had suddenly taken paths different from the ones that seemed to be traced, so at first sight, in 2019, she fell in love with Anthony Delon, Alain’s firstborn: «It was after a day of work, I was tired. I had decided to go out to dinner anyway. And here comes Anthony accompanied by a mutual friend who introduces us. He sat down in front of me and we talked for five hours straight. We were in tune. I had never had an experience like that.».

After just one year he proposed marriage to her.during a vacation on the Amalfi Coast: «It was a sweet, strong, moving moment. He gave me two rings! Anthony was enthusiastic about the place, Positano, but, since the ring he had ordered was not ready, in the meantime he gave me another one». He, already the father of 3 daughters, he hoped to expand his family: “What a wonderful thing that would be.”

Instead the wedding was never celebrated because they separated, without drama and betrayal, almost gracefully. Sveva Alviti says: «We remained on great terms. It was a great love and will always be part of my life.. But sometimes it happens that you separate.”

After being a good young tennis player, she became a top model and a successful actress perhaps above all learning to live with his melancholic temperament: “Only fragility made me strong”. Through work with psychotherapy, he told Republiche understood that «beauty is made of intelligence, of commitment in the things you do. In the energy you put into finding a place in the world“. And she was able to see clearly the things that happened to him when he was too young, like a nuisance: «At the time I was little and I didn’t realize it too well. But rereading it with today’s eyes… Who knows if one day I’ll want to tell it in a film. And then I understood something else: that I don’t want to dress only in black and white. I want color».
