It gives the skin immediate radiance because instantly erases opacity and roughness. Not only. The scrub is an essential step in the beauty routine of those who have to deal with impurities and blackheads. «In these cases it is essential to remove them, reveal a fresh complexion and improve the absorption of treatment treatments ”, explains Corinna Rigoni, president of Donne Dermatologhe Italia.
“It also sweeps away the oily layers that form, not only during adolescence but also in adulthood when cell turnover is more intense and produces a lot of sebum which, by stratifying, creates localized or diffuse shiny areas”.
In general, it is precious for everyone because its action is not only superficial, but also profound. «Used regularly, the scrub gives a mechanical boost that reaches deep, reactivates cell turnover and promotes the growth of fresh and vital skin cells».
What is gommage
Also called scrub or peeling, the scrub creates a mechanical exfoliation. “Unlike the chemical one, which makes use of molecules that with simple contact dissolve the bonds that hold the superficial skin cells firm, these products are rubbed on the skin and, with rubbing, they capture and take away the superfluous”, says the dermatologist.
The scrub massage offers other benefits. «It increases micro-circulation, oxygenates the tissues and gives a rosy glow. In addition, it improves the adherence of the make-up and prolongs its duration ”, explains Corinna Rigoni. In short, it is addictive.
One, a thousand… types of facial scrubs
Chopped sugar and orange peel, chopped rice bran and bamboo cane, micronized coffee beans… The particles combined in soft and gelatinous textures are of different types, and the choice of one version or the other depends on personal tastes. «What matters is the quality. The pearls must be perfectly spherical, to avoid micro-tearing and scratching the epidermis. And then they must contain nourishing and soothing ingredients to calm and restore the complexion », explains the dermatologist.
Experts suggest regular use. «It is recommended to repeat the scrub once a week, twice if there are blackheads and every 15 days if you have sensitive skin. In case of acneic and mature skin with pimples, the hybrid versions are fine, added with alpha-hydroxy acids or enzymes because they give greater comfort. But be careful not to overdo it: using them more frequently weakens the skin and can cause irritation. Finally, they should be avoided if there are injuries and sunburn », Corinna Rigoni warns. There is also an important recommendation. «The product should be used on damp skin massaging gently with the fingertips, avoiding deep pressure that can damage the skin. At the end, the residues are rinsed with plenty of warm water ».
Excessive rubbing also creates invisible damage that affects the skin’s natural protection, exposing it to more serious irritation or problems. «Dead cells are not only” enemies “but act as a barrier. They are rich in a protein called filaggrin, which helps keep our hydro-lipid film in good condition “, explains Pedro Catalá, pharmacist, cosmetologist, university professor at the University of Siena and CEO Twelve Beauty. In conclusion, the gommage makes the complexion glow and smooth, but should be used in moderation.
