But let’s take a step back. The two-piece swimsuit was not initially born for going to the beach to sunbathe. It was created during the Roman Empire with the aim of being used by women in athletics, for ball games. The bikini as we understand it today, was born in 1946 from the inspiration of the aforementioned French designer, who called it a bikini just like the homonymous atoll in the Marshall Islands where, at the end of the 1940s, the Americans conducted nuclear tests.

Why this name? According to Réard, this new type of costume would have had an explosive effect on society. And indeed it happened just like that. The designer initially struggled to find a model to wear it – she was the stripper from the Casino de Paris Michelle Bernardini to agree to pose for the promotional campaign – while the bikini itself took a few years to be worn by women. In the early 1950s, in fact, it was forbidden to show it off on most of the beaches of the globe, and America even banned it for the costume test at the Miss World contest in 1951.

It was partly thanks to Brigitte Bardot if from the sixties all women began to be able to wear it on the beach without too many problems because she exhibited it, without a real official permit, in the 1956 film Too many like it.

Subsequently, numerous Hollywood divas and divines have proposed an iconic bikini model: from Ursula Andress in Agent 007 – License to Kill a Rachel Welch in A million years agofrom Rebecca Ferguson in Mission Impossible a Sue Lyons in Lolitafrom Carrie Fisher in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi to Angelina Jolie in Tomb Raider, until Charlie’s Angels interpreted by Lucy Liu, Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz. Just to name a few.
