The bill for the Judicial Police was voted by an overwhelming majority

With legal technical improvements, which were carried out by the Minister of Justice, Kostas Tsiaras, accepting proposals and observations of parties and competent bodies, the discussion of the draft law on the Judicial Police was completed in the Plenary, which was accepted by an overwhelming majority.

In particular, ND, SYRIZA, PASOK-KINAL and EL.LY were in favor of his principle, while KKE and MeRA25 voted against.

The amendment of the Ministry of Justice, for the institutionalization of a press representative of the courts and prosecutors, also had a wide majority. ND, SYRIZA and PASOK-KINAL voted for it, while KKE and MeRA25 voted against it and Hellenic Solution declared “present”.

Of the legal technical improvements, one concerns the head of the Judicial Police, for whom the Opposition disagreed that he should be a senior or senior retired judge, and the second, the regional directorates, with a request to clarify their responsibilities in the bill so that they are clear before the issuance of the presidential decrees.

According to the new regulations:

“The head of the Judicial Police will be a senior or senior retired judge, whose selection will be made by the Minister of Justice, following a public call for expressions of interest.

The final list of candidates will be submitted to the Institutions Committee of the Parliament, which will give its opinion, while his term will be three years with the possibility of renewal for another three years.

With regard to the regional offices of the Judicial Police, it was defined that “the prosecutor who will direct the prosecution, heads the corresponding regional service, ensuring that the personnel of the police and civilian sectors are distributed in such a way that the needs of all judicial services are covered .

If the regional services are based in a courthouse where there is no prosecutor’s office, this authority is exercised by the governing body of the court, or if there are several courts, this authority is exercised by the most senior of the managing judicial officers”.
