The (bitter) story behind the tender photo of Harry as a baby in mum Diana’s arms

Prince Harry at the age of three, in the arms of mother Diana. A photo which for a few moments will appear in thebomb interview granted by Harry and his wife Meghan Markle a Oprah Winfrey. Una foto full of tenderness that hides a bitter story. It was August 1987. Carlo and Diana, with the little ones William and Harry passed summer in Mallorca with the Spanish royal family.

At the time, the stormy divorce of the princes of Wales was nine years away. Never problems between Carlo and Diana, husband and wife since 1981, had already begun.

The British royal family stayed at the Marivent Palace, the summer residence of the Spanish royal family in Cala Major. The official images of that summer (see gallery above) tell of a seemingly united and happy family. In reality the marriage was already crumbling. Carlo and Diana, far from the flashes of the phographs, had separate diaries: he preferred to paint Majorcan landscapes with his watercolors, Diana loved to swim in the crystal clear waters of the southern beaches of Mallorca.

The only apparent idyll was shattered even in the eyes of the world when, days later, upon returning to the United Kingdom, Diana did not want to accompany Charles on the traditional visit to Queen Elizabeth at Balmoral Castle. “Definitive rupture,” ruled the British press, although at the time neither Carlo’s relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles nor that of Diana with the major James Hewitt, her lover for five years.

Then, on September 16, the princes of Wales were photographed together while they drove Harry to college on his first day of school. They looked happy. A month passed before the two returned to be seen together. And the press began to speculate that they now led separate lives: “Has anyone seen my dad?A British tabloid mischievously headlined. Another advised: “Mend your wedding».

Eight years later, in 1995, the princess would shock the world – and embarrass the Crown – with the infamous interview to the BBC where he spoke of his wedding “a little too crowded” (cause Camilla Parker Bowles) with Carlo of England. The divorce became official in 1996. But the seeds of breakup, during those apparently happy family holidays in Mallorca in 1987, were already there.
