The Black Sea oil spill is expanding, Russian authorities say

Emergency workers involved in cleaning up the Black Sea oil spill have found seven new slicks, a Russian official told state news agency TASS today, as authorities struggle to contain the effects of the nearly month-long disaster. About 2,400 metric tons of oil have spilled into the sea since Dec. 15, when two aging tankers were hit by a storm in the Kerch Strait. Clean-up efforts not enough President Vladimir Putin said yesterday that clean-up efforts so far were not enough to deal with the scale of the situation, which he called “one of the most serious environmental challenges we have faced in years”.
