Earlier this year, the British their Christmas shopping as they try to better organize their spending amid a cost-of-living crisis, according to market research firm NielsenIQ.
In research published today, which follows recent announcements from the likes of Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury’s and Primark, NielsenIQ said 30% of UK consumers started their Christmas shopping before mid-October this year, compared to 18% in 2021.
Mike Watkins, head of retail industry research at NielsenIQ’s UK unit, said: “27% also said they would buy Christmas presents once they saw them in store,” adding that this suggests that the logic of “spreading Christmas spending over time” is more important than ever as Britons face the rising cost of living.
That cost doesn’t appear to be abating, and with inflation at a 40-year high of 10.1% and consumer confidence near record lows, citizens are scrambling to save money.
