Britain will double the size of its military force in Estonia as NATO forces deploy and send equipment, including tanks and armored vehicles, to the Baltic country amid fears of a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Estonia, a former Soviet republic, has been a member of NATO since 2004, in contrast to Ukraine, which sees Russia mustering more than 100,000 troops on its borders.
Britain already leads NATO forces in Estonia with about 900 troops. The country’s Ministry of Defense has not announced the exact number of British troops to be deployed in Estonia.
The United States and Britain have warned that a Russian invasion of Ukraine could take place at any time, and Moscow has denied the allegations, accusing Western countries of spreading lies to divert attention from their aggression.
“Together with our NATO allies, we are deploying troops and equipment on land, sea and air to strengthen European defense in response to the concentration of Russian military forces on the border with Ukraine,” said British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace.
“NATO and our allies have made it clear that any invasion of Ukraine will have serious consequences,” he added.
