British Finance Minister Richie Sunak called on more British companies on Sunday to close their existing investments in Russia and said new investments should be stopped after President Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine, according to Reuters.
“While acknowledging that it may be difficult to close existing investments, I do not think there is any argument for new investments in the Russian economy,” Sunak said in a video message on Twitter.
“I urge asset owners and managers to think very carefully about any investment that would in any way support Putin and his regime.”
Several large British companies have announced they will sell or reduce their interests in Russia – such as energy giants BP and Shell and investment company Aviva – and Sunak said others who do so will have government support.
“I want to make it clear that if companies or investors decide they need to end their economic relationship with Russia, then your government fully supports you,” he said.
