Throughout the history of Windows, developers from Microsoft have repeatedly resorted to very unusual ideas, which, unfortunately or fortunately, do not always reach the release. One of the most striking examples is Windows Longhorn (originally created as an intermediate link between Windows XP and 7, during the development it became the basis for the redesigned Windows Vista). Having abandoned it, Microsoft stopped the development of many original concepts. One of them is the unusual design of the taskbar, which was found by a Twitter user with the nickname @mswin_bat.
“Microsoft actually did a lot of the crazy things you see in their Longhorn concepts. Private Aero Theme is all you need to get that lovely striped taskbar/sidebar in M5,” wrote @mswin_bat.
The image above shows the beginnings of the Aero theme, which later became Vista’s signature theme. This was used at the development stage of Milestone 5 – among other things, the striped design of the taskbar catches the eye from unusual solutions.

At the stage of Milestone 7, the developers partially redesigned the taskbar, but did not completely abandon the striped design.
