“The Candlemas Four” sheds light on what continues to happen, says director

A new series based on a true story arrives on Netflix on Wednesday (30). This time, the case of Candelária Massacre which took place in Rio de Janeiro in 1993, will be portrayed on screen – but in fiction format. “The Candlemas Four” is set 36 hours before the crime and follows four children, addressing their views on the tragedy.

To Marcia Faria who directs production alongside Luis Lomenha the series is inspired by testimonies from survivors of a specific story, but portrays something that recurs in Brazilian reality.

“We are bringing light to a story that is located in 1993, but that continues to happen. The series humanizes statistics a little”, he said in an interview with CNN .

Luis Lomenha who leads and directs the project, commented in an interview with CNN that the Candelária Massacre was always in his imagination and explained why he decided to tell the story from the perspective of four children.

“I had a lot of contact with survivors and families. They always said that what is produced in journalistic and audiovisual terms was always about our gaze, our opinion and no one ever talks about our children and loved ones who had their lives interrupted”, he said.

Candelária Massacre

Eight young people between 11 and 19 years old were shot dead on July 23, 1993 in front of the Candelária church. According to information from Agência Brasil, two military police officers and a former police officer were convicted of the massacre, all three with sentences exceeding 200 years in prison. The action would have been revenge after part of the group had stoned a Military Police car the day before.
