The Capitol remains on red alert with enhanced security measures

Security was tightened at the Capitol today, following police announcing yesterday that an organization was planning an attack on the US Capitol, a sign of concern still two months after extremists stormed the building.

Some members of the QAnon conspiracy movement attach symbolic importance to March 4, because until 1933 this was the day the new presidents took office. By refusing to acknowledge Joe Biden’s victory in the November presidential election, some were convinced that Donald Trump would be sworn in as president for a second time today.

Members of the National Guard patrolled around the Capitol, which has been protected by high railings since January 6. Barbed wire has been installed in some places. According to an official who spoke to Reuters, the police force in charge of protecting the Capitol asked the Pentagon to extend the mission of the National Guard for two months. The request will be considered by the Ministry of Defense but it is more than certain that it will be approved.

5,200 members of the National Guard have been deployed in Washington to guard the Capitol. Their mission was to end on March 12. Due to the intensified measures, it is difficult to imagine that an attack like the one in January could be repeated, when thousands of protesters, supporters of the former president, marched after his speech and stormed the building.

The House of Representatives, however, scheduled for earlier, on Wednesday night, two votes that were to take place today. However, its president, Democrat Nancy Pelosi, will give the regular weekly press conference from the Capitol building, while the Senate meeting will be held normally.

Congressional security officials have urged lawmakers and senators to use underground car parks and crossings to reach the Capitol and be especially careful.

The fear comes from the information received by the American intelligence services. In late February, a group of extremists was discussing a plan to take control of the Capitol, according to an FBI and Homeland Security document. These extremists are convinced that the November election result is a product of massive fraud and deny Biden legitimacy as president.

Trump, who now lives permanently in Florida, did not react to this information.

The QAnon movement was born in 2017 in the USA, among Trump supporters who believed the Republican tycoon was crusading against “an elite of pedophile Satanists.” Although it has spread to Europe, it is now excluded from major social networking platforms, making it more difficult for its members to follow. Many were discouraged by the failure of the January 6 invasion and the extent of their mobilization is unknown today.

At the luxury Trump International Hotel near the Capitol, room rates for Wednesday and Thursday nights skyrocketed to $ 1,331. The “normal” price until the end of March is $ 476.

Yesterday morning, however, the surrounding streets were almost deserted, in contrast to January 6, when thousands of Trump supporters arrived in Washington to watch his speech outside the White House. Five people, including a police officer, were killed in the attack. So far, more than 270 people have been prosecuted for their involvement in the bloody incidents.
