The ceramic sector generates 60,000 jobs: 2.4% of the total generated by the industry in Spain

The citizens of the province of Castellón are aware of the importance of the ceramic sector for the generation of employment and wealth in the Castellón regions. But although the Spanish ceramic sector is based on more than 90% in the Castellón cluster, the effect of the industry does not remain so only in this province.

The report Socioeconomic and fiscal impact of the ceramic tiles and pavements sector presented this Monday by the employer Ascer and which has been prepared by the consulting firm PwC demonstrates the power of an industry that goes beyond tiles, and that includes sectors such as manufacturers of ceramic frits, glazes and colors, or manufacturers of ceramic machinery and technology.

The study shows that ceramics generate 60,000 jobs in Spain, that is to say, 2.4% of the industrial employment of the whole country. And the fact is that the multiplier effect of the industry on the labor market is high: for each direct job 3.8 new ones are generated. In addition, the report praises that 85% of jobs “are permanent and stable”, a condition to take into account at a particularly difficult time for employment due to the health crisis.

But the impact of the ceramic sector does not stop there. If we observe tax collection In Spain, we see how in 2019 the total tax collection of the sector amounted to more than 980 million euros, which meant 0.5% of total national tax revenue. In other words, the sector contributed to collecting one out of every 217 euros in Spain in 2019.

No doubt the exporting character of the ceramic sector is another of its great strengths, even more so if we see how in 2020, in the middle of the Covid year, sales abroad of the industry have grown by 4.4%.

A year before, In 2019, the tile and ceramic flooring sector reached an export volume of 2,818 million euros, 49% within the European continent. In 2019, the sector’s export volume represented 0.9% of Spain’s total exports.In turn, it obtained a trade surplus of 2,720 million euros, which contributed to reducing Spain’s trade deficit by 8% in 2019.

Regarding the total impact of the tile and ceramic flooring sector on the Spanish economy amounted to more than 3,800 million in 2019, which is equivalent to 2.7% of the Spanish industrial GDP.
