The Russian invasion of Ukraine, high energy costs, supply chain and transport problems, climate change are some of the challenges facing not only “traditional” entrepreneurs but also the so-called angel investors, who support the their capital the domestic ecosystem of startups.

As the stage has been set for post-pandemic normalcy, concerns have intensified both among start-ups and among Venture Capital regarding the always topical issue of seeking the necessary funding not only for implementation but also for continued of a new venture.

It is important and now necessary for startups, which are in the initial stage of their activity, to be offered the tools that will help them in the difficult task of raising funds as well as in a smoother transition from the first to the second round of financing.

Although the Greek ecosystem in recent years has taken important steps, trying to approach the more mature, having according to sources with knowledge has traveled quite a distance compared to seven years ago, when it was in its infancy, but lately there is concern. about what the next day will bring and whether start-ups will be able to secure new funding.

Angel investors can play a key role in this and the impact that the choice behind an investment will have. “The impact can have different interpretations and can not be explained one-dimensionally and unilaterally,” said Markos Veremis, Founding Partner of Big Pi Ventures at the Hellenic International Business Angels Summit.

“For example, when about 7 years ago the Greek ecosystem of startups took its first steps, the unemployment rate among young people exceeded 50%. Therefore, then the impact meant to solve the problem of unemployment, to offer hope, to creates the environment for skills development.

The priorities were very different from the priorities set by other advanced ecosystems. “My journey as an investor was guided by the ten-year debt crisis of the Greek economy.”

There is a wait-and-see attitude today and investors may be more reluctant to move to a new position, however according to market cycles there are opportunities that can be seized.
