The Chios airport expansion contract was signed

The contract for the further upgrading of Chios airport was signed today in the presence of the Ministers of Infrastructure and Transport Mr. Kostas Karamanlis, Mr. Notis Mitarakis of Immigration & Asylum and the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, responsible for infrastructure, Mr. Giorgos Karagiannis.

The new projects, with a budget of 9.6 million euros plus VAT, concern the expansion and improvement of the building and electromechanical facilities of the terminal of “Homeros” Airport.

The project is financed by the NSRF 2014-2020, through the Operational Program “Transport Infrastructures, Environment and Sustainable Development”.

The Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Mr. Costas Karamanlis stated: “Today we did not just sign a contract for the improvement of the airport of Chios, “Homeros”. Obviously we did that too. But not only. Because this signature is a piece in the puzzle of the effort that we are doing to improve the image of the country’s airports. And either with new facilities, or with the improvement of the existing ones, or with discussions-agreements with the staff who work, you see that we have reached the point where our country has good airports, but to be today a pan-European exception to the bad image of air transport. We have achieved this with a plan, but also with the cooperation of the employees. And this is how we want to continue to improve our product for ourselves, but also for our guests.”

The Minister of Immigration and Asylum, Mr. Notis Mitarakis, said: “The Ministry of Infrastructure proceeded with two particularly important projects for Chios airport. First, the extension of the landing – takeoff and maneuvering runway, which is in progress at a particularly fast pace, and secondly, today, with the improvement and expansion of the building facilities, thus completing the upgrade of the airport. It is a project that in Chios we have been discussing for decades and will now be completed in the very near future. Along with other actions by this government, such as the preservation of island VAT, immigration, the strengthening and advertising of our islands, in terms of the tourist product and the increased percentage in the Development Law, we are proceeding with the development of the economy of the Northern Aegean, which was particularly affected by the immigration crisis”.

For his part, the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure, Mr. Giorgos Karagiannis, said: “The contract for the expansion and improvement of the airport facilities at the airport of Chios essentially complements our initiatives to modernize this important infrastructure and change the travel experience for the residents and the thousands of tourists. With the upgrading of the airport’s building facilities and the extension of the runway, the “Homeros” airport acquires modern features, comparable to the quality of services offered by the island. The modernization of important infrastructures, such as the airports , is in full development, as part of a broader and coherent plan. For example, we are expected to immediately contract the upgrade project of the Paros airport and to tender corresponding projects in Naxos, while we are also making interventions at the Syros airport. At the same time, the work is also progressing at the airport of Kastelli in Crete, Steriz through our tourism we strengthen our economy and strengthen the image of the country which will now have modern infrastructure. We are next to the citizens with a unique concern to respond to the demand for development for all because that is the only way we can move forward”.
